Mold and tooling management for manufacturers

How manufacturers manage molds, dies and tooling: mold register, shot counts, preventive maintenance, storage, customer-owned molds and records.

For plastics injection molders, die-casters, metal stampers, packaging and rubber manufacturers, molds and dies are the plant's most valuable tools. A damaged mold can stop production for weeks; a lost customer-owned mold can end a customer relationship. Yet in many plants, molds are tracked on a whiteboard and maintenance happens only when parts start coming out defective. Mold and tooling management treats each mold as a critical asset with its own record, history and maintenance plan.

The mold register

FieldExample
Mold ID and tagM-0342
Description4-cavity cap mold, 28 mm
Products madePart numbers and customers
OwnerCompany-owned or customer-owned
Cavities4 (note any blocked cavities)
Compatible machinesMachine sizes or specific presses
LocationStorage rack or mounted on machine
Shot or stroke countTotal cycles to date
Maintenance intervalFor example, every 50,000 shots
ConditionIn service, under repair, retired
DocumentsDrawings, setup sheets, photos, repair history

Track usage by shots or strokes

Molds wear with use, not with calendar time. Record shots (injection molding) or strokes (stamping) from each job, either from machine counters or from output recorded per job divided by cavities. Usage drives maintenance timing.

Example: a 4-cavity mold produced 160,000 good parts plus 4,000 scrapped parts this month. Shots ≈ 164,000 ÷ 4 = 41,000. If maintenance is due every 50,000 shots, it will be due again soon after next month's production starts.

Preventive maintenance for molds

LevelTypical tasksTrigger
Between runsClean, inspect, rust prevention before storageEach unload
RoutineClean vents, check ejectors, lubricate moving parts, check cooling channelsShot count interval
MajorDisassemble, replace worn components, polish, check dimensionsLarger shot interval or quality signals

Record each maintenance and repair against the mold, linking to maintenance work orders.

Setup sheets and standard settings

Each mold should have a setup sheet with the approved machine settings (temperatures, pressures, times) that produce good parts. Standard settings reduce startup scrap and make changeovers faster (SMED, scrap and rework tracking).

Storage and handling

  • Dedicated racks with labeled locations
  • Rust prevention and covers
  • Safe lifting equipment and procedures
  • Check-out and return records when molds move to machines, repair shops or other plants

Customer-owned molds

Many Philippine contract manufacturers hold molds owned by their customers. Record ownership clearly, follow the customer's maintenance and approval requirements, report condition when requested, and never modify or move them without authorization. Include them in periodic verification (fixed asset audit).

Tooling KPIs

  • Mold-related downtime hours (machine downtime tracking)
  • Preventive maintenance done on time by shot count
  • Scrap attributed to tooling
  • Average changeover time per mold
  • Repair cost per mold per year

Where Cirquolus fits

The Cirquolus production management system includes mold records alongside job orders, processing, productivity, cost and product movement. Mold repairs and vendor work can be handled through asset management service requests and engineering work.

Frequently asked questions

What is mold management?

Managing molds and dies as critical assets: registering them, tracking usage, maintaining them by shot count, storing them properly and recording repairs.

How often should injection molds be maintained?

Based on shot counts and condition, with cleaning between runs, routine maintenance at set shot intervals and major overhauls less frequently.

How do you count mold shots?

From machine counters, or by dividing parts produced (including scrap) by the number of active cavities.

How should customer-owned molds be handled?

Record ownership, follow customer requirements for maintenance and changes, and include them in regular verification.
