ERP modules explained: what each one does and how they connect
A plain-language guide to ERP modules: HR, payroll, timekeeping, purchasing, inventory, warehouse, sales, POS, production, assets, CRM, finance and KPI.
An ERP is made of modules, each covering a business area. You rarely need all of them on day one. Understanding what each module does, and how modules share data, helps you decide where to start and what to add later.
Core ERP modules
| Module | What it does | Connects to |
|---|---|---|
| HRIS | Employee records, organization, movements, access | Payroll, timekeeping, recruitment |
| Recruitment and onboarding | Vacancies, applicants, onboarding | HRIS |
| Timekeeping | Schedules, attendance, leave and overtime approvals | Payroll |
| Payroll | Pay computation, statutory contributions, tax, payslips | Finance (journals), HRIS |
| Employee self-service | Payslips, requests, schedules for employees | HRIS, timekeeping, payroll |
| Purchasing | Requisitions, POs, supplier quotes | Inventory, payables |
| Supplier management | Supplier records, accreditation, performance | Purchasing, payables |
| Inventory | Stock by location, movements, valuation | POS, purchasing, production, finance |
| Warehouse and logistics | Receiving, transfers, deliveries, returns | Inventory, sales |
| Sales and field sales | Quotations, orders, targets | Inventory, receivables |
| Point of sale | Store and restaurant transactions | Inventory, finance |
| CRM | Leads, accounts, pipelines, conversations | Sales |
| Production | Plans, job orders, floor recording, costs | Inventory, purchasing, finance |
| Asset management | Fixed assets, assignments, maintenance | Finance, HR |
| Accounts payable | Supplier invoices, vouchers, payments | Purchasing, finance |
| Accounts receivable | Customer invoices, collections, aging | Sales, finance |
| Financial management | Journals, trial balance, financial statements | All modules |
| KPI and performance | Direction, scorecards, reviews, improvement | All modules |
| Collaboration | Files, projects, chat, announcements | All teams |
How modules connect: three examples
Hire to pay. Recruitment hires an applicant → HRIS creates the employee → timekeeping records attendance → payroll computes pay → finance receives the payroll journal. See payroll software.
Procure to pay. Purchasing issues a PO → warehouse receives goods → inventory updates stock → payables matches the invoice → finance records payment. See procure-to-pay.
Order to cash. Sales takes an order → inventory reserves stock → warehouse delivers → receivables invoices and collects → finance records revenue. See order-to-cash.
When modules share data, each step uses the previous step's records instead of re-typed information.
Which modules to start with
| Business type | Common starting modules |
|---|---|
| Employers with large workforces | HRIS, timekeeping, payroll |
| Retail chains | POS, inventory, warehouse |
| Distributors | Inventory, warehouse, sales, receivables |
| Manufacturers | Production, inventory, purchasing |
| Service companies | HR and payroll, CRM, projects, receivables |
| Groups with many entities | Finance and payroll across companies |
See phased ERP rollout.
Modules vs. separate apps
Buying separate apps for each function can work at small scale, but integration effort, duplicated data and multiple vendors grow with the business. See ERP vs. best-of-breed and software consolidation.

Which ERP module should be implemented first?
