Night shift differential in the Philippines: computation and examples

How to compute night shift differential for work between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., including on rest days, holidays and overtime, with formulas and payroll examples.

Night shift differential (ND) in the Philippines is at least 10% of the employee's regular wage for each hour worked between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. It is set by Article 86 of the Labor Code. When night work happens on a rest day, holiday or during overtime, the 10% is computed on the rate that applies to that hour, not on the ordinary rate.

ND is a major payroll item for BPOs, hospitals, manufacturing plants, security agencies, logistics hubs and 24-hour retail. Small errors repeated across hundreds of night-shift employees add up quickly.

Who is entitled?

Most rank-and-file employees are covered. The ND provision generally excludes government employees, retail and service establishments regularly employing not more than five workers, managerial employees, field personnel and certain others. A company policy or CBA may give a higher rate than 10%, which then becomes the rule for payroll.

Night shift differential formulas

SituationRate per night hour (as % of hourly rate)
Ordinary day, regular hours110% (100% × 110%)
Ordinary day, overtime137.5% (125% × 110%)
Rest day or special day, regular hours143% (130% × 110%)
Rest day or special day, overtime185.9% (169% × 110%)
Regular holiday, regular hours220% (200% × 110%)
Regular holiday, overtime286% (260% × 110%)
Regular holiday on rest day, regular hours286% (260% × 110%)

In each row, the 10% ND is added to the rate already payable for that hour. See overtime pay computation and holiday pay rules for the base rates.

Worked examples

An employee's hourly rate is ₱150.

Example 1: regular night shift. Shift from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (8 hours, all within the ND window, unpaid meal break handled separately under your policy). ND = 8 × ₱150 × 10% = ₱120. Total for the shift = (8 × ₱150) + ₱120 = ₱1,320.

Example 2: shift partly in the ND window. Shift from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Only 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. (4 hours) is in the window. ND = 4 × ₱150 × 10% = ₱60.

Example 3: night overtime. After a 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift, the employee works 2 approved overtime hours to midnight on an ordinary day. Overtime with ND = 2 × ₱150 × 125% × 110% = ₱412.50.

Example 4: night work on a regular holiday. 8 hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on a regular holiday. Pay = 8 × ₱150 × 200% × 110% = ₱2,640.

Shifts that cross midnight into a holiday

A shift that starts on an ordinary day and ends on a holiday (or the reverse) should be split at midnight: hours before midnight follow the first day's rules, hours after follow the second day's. This is where manual payroll most often goes wrong, especially around Christmas, New Year and local holidays. Make sure your timekeeping system splits shift hours by calendar day and applies the correct rate to each segment.

Controls for night-shift payroll

  • Accurate time logs with the actual in and out times, not just "present"
  • Schedules per employee so the system knows which hours are regular and which are overtime
  • Automatic splitting of hours into ND and non-ND segments and across calendar days
  • Exception review for missing logs, which tend to rise on night shifts
  • A clear meal break policy so ND is not paid on unpaid break time, or paid where your policy says it should be

Frequently asked questions

How much is night differential in the Philippines?

At least 10% of the employee's regular hourly rate for each hour worked between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. A company policy or CBA may grant more.

Is night differential computed on overtime?

Do minimum wage earners pay tax on night differential?

Statutory minimum wage earners are exempt from income tax on their minimum wage and on holiday pay, overtime pay, night shift differential and hazard pay.

Is night differential required for managers?

Managerial employees are generally excluded from the night shift differential provision, unless company policy grants it.
